Women Leading In Iraq

The very dedicated staff from the National Democratic Institute have gathered together women from across five western provinces of Iraq to build change.  Women's Advisory Boards from Anbar, Diyala, Kirkuk, Ninewa, and Salahaddin are sharing ideas and knowledge to foster hope and actions in their communities.

These women are leading the way with their courage, intelligence and hard work are making a difference. Ellen Woodsworth from Women Transforming Cities was invited to be part of their conference and shared wise practices and the gender equity work of other cities.

Making Vancouver Women-Friendly!

City Council responded strongly to make Vancouver a global leader in advancing gender equity!

A. THAT Council receive the Administrative Report dated April 9, 2019, entitled “Interim Report – Women’s Equity and Trans, Gender Variant and Two-Spirit Inclusion”, for information.
B. THAT Council direct staff to send the Administrative Report dated April 9, 2019, entitled “Interim Report – Women’s Equity and Trans, Gender Variant and Two-Spirit Inclusion”, to the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, Vancouver Public Library Board, Vancouver Board of Education and Vancouver Police Department Board for information.

D. THAT further to the motion dated November 28, 2017, entitled “Equitable Parental Leave at the City of Vancouver”, Council direct staff to arrange a briefing on this matter to explore options for achieving this goal.


Furthermore, the following amendment to the main motion was moved by Councillor Jean Swanson to direct staff to "Develop a comprehensive gendered intersectional strategy with short and long-term goals that are measurable for each department and every strategy and supported for at least 6 years". The amended motion passed unanimously.

The Municipality of Batticaloa Takes the Lead for Sri Lanka!

Celene Fung, Strategic Planner of ASSET, WUSC helped the Municipality of Batticaloa, Sri Lanka launch a Women Friendly Cities Challenge (WFCC). The objective of the WFCC is to identify issues and set priorities that specifically impact women and to guide municipal budgets and to develop responsive programs and city infrastructure. The WFCC will also establish engagement processes and opportunities for women and community stakeholders to provide input into decision making processes. Making Batticaloa ”women friendly” will make the community more responsive to the needs of women, vulnerable members of society, family and children.

Women's Initiative Edmonton is a City of Edmonton initiative, supported and endorsed by City Council, that fosters and promotes equality, opportunity, access to services, justice and inclusion for women in our city. Vancouver: a city for all women! The Gender Equality Strategy is unanimously approved!

Vancouver: a city for all women: the Gender Equality Strategy was approved unanimously by city council on Wednesday January 17th!  The strategy builds upon existing policies and initiatives and outlines additional steps to promote equality between women and men, and challenge gender discrimination. The strategy will be implemented over the next 10 years. Way to go Vancouver! 


The strategy deals with issues faced by women in five priority areas:

  • Safety and violence against women

  • Accessible quality childcare

  • Safe and affordable housing

  • Women's leadership and representation

  • Develop and implement an intersectional policy framework
